Lecanto School of Art

Lecanto School of Art is a program designed especially for students with a high interest in the area of the visual arts. Every year, twenty-five or more eighth grade students are selected from all 4 Citrus County Middle Schools through auditions. The audition process includes a written application, assigned drawings, a review of the student's portfolio (most recent work), a review of the student's discipline and attendance records, and a personal interview.

Lecanto High School is now an IB World School (International Baccalaureate) and incoming IB students can also apply to the LSA Program. It may or may not be possible to participate in both. Occassionally, there are scheduling conflicts & it may not be possible to get all of the LSA courses offered. The Administration does their best but cannot make any guarantees..

This program strives to develop a responsible, skilled, and competitive artist. If there are indications that the student has discipline problems, or is habitually absent or tardy, they cannot be taught and cannot be accepted into this program. Once accepted, if any of these problems appear, the student can be dropped from the program at the next interval in the Term. Students who have been granted an Out-of-Zone waiver, will lose their waiver if they are dropped from the program and therefore, will have to enroll in the school for which they are zoned.

Each class will be grouped together for homeroom, freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and for art classes, but each student in the class will be scheduled separately for their appropriate academic classes.

Lecanto School of Art began in 1997 and has graduated over 200 art students many of which received offers for art scholarships worth a combined total of over two million dollars. LSA graduates have attended or are attending schools such as The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the School of Visual Arts in NYC, Alfred University in NY, Parsons School of Art & Design in NYC, The Art Institute of San Francisco in California, Columbus College of Art in Ohio, the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale, the Florida School of the Arts in Palatka, and Savannah College of Art & Design in Georgia. At present we have 4 students attending the Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarasota.

Lecanto School of Art boasts 4 Art Teachers: one with a Master's degrees and two Nationally Board Certified. All teach in their field of expertise. Many of our students have gone on to work as professional Artists in corporations around the country. They have had work published in magazines and we are aware of three who are Art Teachers in other counties or states.

A student from the LSA Class of 2003, wrote, "You have believed in me and given me the opportunities to excel. It's been a difficult 4 years, but it has been the best 4 years of my life. I have grown so much. Thank you. LSA is forever a part of me and I'm going to make you proud!"
